No Better Day Than Groundhog Day

On February second, the midpoint day between Winter and Spring Equinox, the superstition states that if a groundhog sees its shadow, it will go back to its den, and there will be six more weeks of winter. If not, spring will arrive early. This is per the grand laws of the Universe. We need both.
In art, as in life, you must have dark to see light. Like Phil on Groundhogs Day, the shadows make us see better because in the dark, we have no choice but to seek light.
What happens when all we see is light? We are blinded by it.
So was a character named Phil, played by Bill Murray, who finally learns the things he had to know and understand about himself by having to relive the same day in the shadows, in a loop, until he could break a cycle.
Director Harold Ramis estimated that Phil was stuck in a loop for about 10,000 years, later saying it was probably more like 10 years. This is what it feels like when you want to feel true love in your home, but you can’t see the way there. Like Phil, the only way to get there is to find your way out of the shadow and into the light.
Once Phil sees the light, he falls in love with the town and its people. Most of all, himself. When he falls in love with Rita, a woman he would have otherwise ignored in the light, a new life begins. The greatest secret that Groundhog Day, the movie reveals, is that love is the only assured path to genuine happiness.
